Bee Happy

Here's a little tag I made for my daughter to cheer her up, as she's not been feeling well.

Tag was cut from Nature Walk 6x6 paper, and the hexagon bee was also from the Nature Walk line (die cuts) available at UmWowStudio.  Chipboard hexagons are from UmWowStudio and were clear heat embossed with Unity's Bee Happy Hexagons stamps.  The Bee Happy sentiment was also from that stamp set.  I inked the edges of the tag with Brushed Corduroy distress ink and used a light tan memento ink with Stampology's "postmarks" hexagon stamps for added background interest.  You can barely see them on the right side of the tag, but they say "always Amazing", "always Loved", and "always Beautiful".  I chose those three from the five in the set because that's what my daughter is.  I added a strip of Teresa Collins' "now and then" washi for a little color and used an UmWow chipboard leaf as a stamp to add some texture with gesso.  Lastly, I added a tiny bee in the lower left corner using the Bee Happy stamp set and clear embossing powder.  I also used copics spica (subtle glitter pen) in dark red for the hexagon bee's eyes.

UmWow April sketch

The April challenge at UmWowStudio is another great sketch:



I've really enjoyed playing along, especially since working from sketches makes it easier for me to come up with a project!  Here's what I did for this one. (It very closely follows the sketch, right down to the VivaLas Vegas lace border stamp used at the base of the picture).  I'm not sure if I'll turn it into a card or use it in a mini album.  I've been thinking of putting one together, but don't have any pictures picked out yet.  Maybe one of our cats?  They all love chasing bugs!!

March UmWow Sketch

Here's my take on it:

I usually make cards or tags, but this time I wanted to make something with my children's pics on it to take to my office.  Since we have 3 children, this sketch was perfect.  I also have a very nice picture/card holder my daughter made me for Mother's Day a couple of years ago.  This card will fit nicely in it - just right for my desk!
I used UmWow circle mask, chipboard frame and banner.  The banner was covered with paper from the pad used for the background -Prima's All About Me.  I also used May Arts ribbon, some Washi, a prima flower (edges inked to coordinate) and cheesecloth.

This is Ruth, and for my project I decided to do a tag.  I whitewashed both the cardstock (Tim Holtz kraft resist) and chipboard tag using thin gesso.  (DeeDee from UmWowStudios has a tutorial on whitewashing. She's also the designer of the awesome butterfly cut-out chipboard tag.)  Dried pink larkspur flowers were glued in place then painted with mod podge.  The crinkle ribbon used was Sterling from 3girljam, white eyelet on the bottom of the tag was from my sewing box, and the blue-gray tulle trim was from Websters Pages.  The Tim Holtz nature's elements clear stamp set sentiment on the chipboard tag was stamped and heat embossed.  This was a simple and fun project.  Can't wait to give it to one of my friends!

S.W.A.T. Drill #25

Drill # 25 at S.W.A.T. is to use one color other than black and white on your project.  My color is Pink! (for Valentine's Day)

I used several papers from an old Martha Stewart mat pad for the stitched insert (the card front is popped up a little over the patchwork background, underneath).  Pink thread was used for the stitching, and pink grosgrain ribbon was used for the arrow, along with UmWowStudios arrow and chevron chippies that were heat embossed.  The card base is from Making Memories Love Struck card pad.  I didn't have any heart nesties, so I used a small square and circle.  It took 3 steps to cut out the heart, but worked OK.  I added some pink satin swirl trim to the bottom of the card and a separate card insert so that the underside of the patchwork heart is covered.  The sentiment is stamped on this insert.  This was a fun and simple card. 

My first attempt was a circle version, below, with materials from the same paper pad. For this one I mixed reds and pinks. The back of the circle patchwork is also covered on the inside card front. 

February UmWow sketch

This valentine is for UmWow's February sketch challenge.  I've been trying to do more layering on my cards, since I love the look but have a hard time actually doing it.

I added two flourishes and two white heart rub-ons to the background paper.  I also used UmWow's polaroid frame, arrow, and butterfly chippies.  They were painted with gesso then the butterfly wings were sprinkled with distressed glitter.  I also added some seed beads and gems to the butterfly for more dimension. A few heart gems, and a flower on the arrow finished off the card. (There's also a "Be My Valentine" rub-on across the stems of the large flourish, but it doesn't really show up.  I may have to put something else over it).  Thanks for taking a look, and be sure to check out UmWow Studios and their blog for lots of beautiful goods and ideas!  I think I like it better without the heart gems on the top edge and bottom side, so I removed them (see top picture).  

January UmWow sketch- tag

I wanted to try a second project using the January UmWow sketch and decided to rotate the design.  I made a tag using 3 different distress inks - mustard seed, forest moss, brushed corduroy (even colored my own ribbon with them) and some UmWow chippies. There are some stamped images under the words and chippie squares, as well as the stamped banners.  The vertical zigzag was heat embossed with clear embossing powder, as was the little star on the bottom square.  A strip of washi finished it off.  I think I like this one better than my first.  I also inked and embossed the tag holder to coordinate with the tag.  Thanks for taking a look.

Christmas quilting gifts

I'm a little late getting this posted, but I gave several quilted gifts this Christmas.  I hadn't done any quilting in many years, so it was lots of fun (and stressful at times) doing these projects.  I started small:  a quilt for my granddaughter's doll and a pillow for my grandson.  Once those were done, I started on a memory quilt for my oldest son.  I finished the quilt early Christmas morning - just in time to wrap it and put it under the tree.  I'm quite happy with how they all turned out, and everyone was pleased to receive them. Now I need to start on a memory quilt for my youngest son and also one for my daughter.

January UmWow Sketch

I'm loving these UmWow sketches! This sketch inspired me to test out some of my distress embossing powders, since the squares reminded me of swatches.  I used several UmWow masks: light bulb for the banners, star, and chevron. For more texture, I embossed the cardstock.  The square chippies were heat embossed with a variety of distress embossing powders.  I really like these powders (got them from DeeDee quite a long time ago) - they give a beautiful luster and texture.  I think my favorite square "swatch" is the green one - looks and feels like a ceramic tile.

It's the Most Wonderful Time -UmWow Dec Sketch and Swat Drill #21

This card was made using UmWow's December Sketch, and is also for the SWAT Drill #21  Caroling we will go.  I really like using sketches, and love the UmWow goodies!
